Spatial AI

Core Definition

Spatial AI uses position, direction, and movement data from cameras and sensors to understand how people and objects are arranged and move within a space. Rather than only detecting an object, it turns relationships between space and behavior, such as movement between zones, dwell, and crowding, into data.

The difference between object detection and spatial understanding

Computer vision is the starting point for finding people or objects in a frame. Spatial AI goes further by reading which zone an object occupied, where it moved, and how long it remained in the same place.

That difference makes it possible to view an entire store as one space. Instead of only counting people in one frame, operators can compare the flow from entry through displays to checkout.

When spatial data helps operations

A longer dwell time in one zone does not establish its cause on its own. Alongside signals such as heatmaps, paths, and crowd density, spatial data provides evidence for which hypothesis to check first.

This connection is especially important in large stores, exhibition spaces, and logistics sites that require multiple cameras. Aligning separate views to one coordinate system makes it possible to read the flow of the whole space on the same basis.
