Customer Behavior Analysis

An analytical method to understand, through data, what customers do in store

Core Definition

Customer behavior analysis is a method of collecting and analyzing, as data, the movement paths, dwell patterns, product-contact behavior, and purchase-decision process of customers who visit a store. AI cameras capture the actual in-store behavior that is difficult to grasp through surveys or POS data alone.

Why observe customer behavior directly

"Why didn't the customer buy?" is the most important question, and the hardest to answer. Customers who don't buy rarely respond to surveys, and even customers who do buy may not be able to explain their own purchase motives accurately. Only direct behavioral data captures the truth.

Analyzing the behavior of customers who visited the store but did not buy reveals which zones they stopped in and which products they picked up and put back. This data becomes direct evidence for improving displays, pricing, and product assortment.

Applications of behavior analysis data

Beyond simple dwell-time and path analysis, customer behavior analysis is also used to measure marketing effectiveness. If the visit rate and dwell time in a zone increase after a POP (Point of Purchase) display is installed there, that demonstrates the effect of that POP display.

The impact of staff customer service on purchase conversion can also be analyzed. Measuring the difference in purchase rate between when staff approach customers first and when they don't makes it possible to establish service standards.

How SAAI Uses It

SAAI's saai insight automatically generates weekly and monthly customer behavior reports that combine visitor movement paths, zone-by-zone dwell patterns, and product pickup behavior. Anonymization strips personal information so only behavior patterns are analyzed, and an A/B test format compares the effects of display changes before and after.
